Why Houseflies End Up Inside a Car
Finding a fly buzzing against the windscreen is common in Singapore, where doors are opened often in car parks, at drive-throughs and near food centres. A single fly that slips in while you load groceries usually leaves on its own. A fly that is still there the next day, or several flies at once, is a sign that something inside the car is giving them a reason to stay.
Houseflies are drawn to food and moisture. They feed on spilled drinks, crumbs, sticky residue and anything that is breaking down, and they look for warm, sheltered spots to rest. A cabin that is closed up in the heat with a forgotten takeaway bag or a damp mat can be an easy target.
- Open doors, windows or boot while loading food or rubbish
- Takeaway containers, wrappers or drink cups left in door pockets and under seats
- Sticky spills in carpet edges, seat rails and cup holders
- Damp floor mats or carpet that trap organic debris
- Parking close to bin centres, wet markets or food waste areas
Houseflies, Fruit Flies or Something Else?
It helps to know what you are dealing with, because the fix depends on the source. Houseflies are the larger, grey flies that buzz loudly and land on surfaces. Tiny flies hovering around spilled juice or fruit are usually a different problem, and our guide to fruit fly infestation in your car covers that case.
If you see small pale worms rather than flies, you are probably looking at larvae from flies that laid eggs on rotting food. Our article on maggots in your car explains what to do in that situation. Flies and larvae together point strongly to a food or waste source that has not yet been found.
What You Can Do Yourself First
Start with the source rather than the flies. Remove every piece of rubbish, check under and between the seats, inside the glove box, door pockets and the boot, and take out the floor mats. Anything that was once food or drink deserves a close look.
Once the source is gone, clean the area. Wipe hard surfaces, vacuum the carpet and seat gaps thoroughly, and let mats dry fully in fresh air before they go back in. Lingering food smells can keep attracting flies, so our guide to removing food spill smells from your car is a useful next read if the cabin still smells.
- Remove all rubbish and food packaging, including from the boot
- Take out the mats and check the carpet underneath
- Vacuum seat gaps, rails and carpet edges with a crevice tool
- Wipe sticky spots in cup holders and door pockets
- Dry everything fully before closing the car up again
- Open doors briefly and keep them closed otherwise so new flies do not come in
What Not to Do
Avoid spraying household fly spray inside the cabin. It can mark dashboard plastics and upholstery, the product is not made for car interiors, and it does nothing about the source that brought the flies in. Leaving the car closed up with a hidden food source is also a mistake, because the problem simply gets worse in the heat.
When Flies Keep Coming Back
If you have cleaned thoroughly and still see flies after a few days, or you find larvae, the source may be somewhere you cannot easily reach, such as under the carpet, inside seat padding or in the boot lining. At that point it makes sense to bring in a professional.
Cleanic uses MIRAKN, a dry-gas pest-control treatment. MIRAKN is a Sumitomo Chemical formulation for pest insects, applied by sealing the car with the gas. It is a pest-control treatment only. Cleaning, odour removal and steam cleaning are separate processes, and Cleanic will tell you honestly if your car needs those as well. You can read more about the car fumigation service and how the dry-gas approach works on our MIRAKN dry gas fumigation page.
Which Cleanic Option Fits?
For a car where you want to stop flies from settling in, or you want pest-control attention without a long session, the $118 MIRAKN Express takes about 1 hour and does not include steam cleaning or a vacuum. It is sealed with the gas for about 30 minutes, followed by about 30 minutes of tidy-up.
The full MIRAKN dry gas fumigation, from $180, takes about 1.5 hours: about 1 hour sealed and about 30 minutes of tidy-up, and it includes a vacuum. If the cause is a messy spill or food residue that needs physical removal, adding steam cleaning to the full fumigation in one visit takes about 3 hours. Colin will advise which one suits your car after you send the details.
- MIRAKN Express: $118, about 1 hour, no steam cleaning, no vacuum
- Full MIRAKN dry gas fumigation: from $180, about 1.5 hours, includes a vacuum
- Full fumigation plus steam cleaning: about 3 hours in one visit
How to Stop Flies Coming Back
Prevention is mostly habit. Take rubbish and food packaging out of the car the same day, wipe spills as soon as they happen, and keep mats dry. If you eat in the car often, such as on a long shift, a small lidded bin helps. Regular preventive attention also makes it harder for pests to become established. Our guide to preventing pest infestations in cars sets out a practical routine.
FAQs
Why are there houseflies in my car even though it looks clean?
Flies can be drawn to residue you cannot see, such as dried drink in carpet edges, crumbs under seat rails or a damp mat. Check hidden spots including the boot, seat gaps and door pockets, and dry any damp areas completely.
Is it normal to find one fly in the car?
A single fly that came in through an open door is common and often leaves on its own. Several flies, or flies that are still there after a day or two, usually mean something inside the car is attracting them.
Can I use household fly spray in my car?
It is not recommended. Household sprays are not designed for car interiors, may mark plastics and upholstery, and do not remove the source of the problem.
How long does a MIRAKN treatment take?
The $118 MIRAKN Express takes about 1 hour and does not include steam cleaning. The full MIRAKN dry gas fumigation, from $180, takes about 1.5 hours, and full fumigation plus steam cleaning in one visit takes about 3 hours.
Does MIRAKN clean the car or remove smells?
No. MIRAKN is a pest-control treatment. Cleaning, steam cleaning and odour removal are separate processes, and Cleanic will advise if your car needs them as well.
